The band grew up together in a Devon seaside town, Teignmouth. They moved from various parts of the country, and met at school. Matthew Bellamy is the singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianoist, Dom Howard is on the drums and Chris Wolstenholme plays the bass. When they were at school, the band had ideas of calling themselves 'Fixed Penalties' and 'Gothic Plague'.
The band wanted to perform in front of people, but at the time they were only 13, however they did rehearse together all them time. 2 years later, in 1996, the band entered a local contest playing Nirvana's 'Tourette's'. They called themselves 'Rocket Baby Dolls', and surprisingly they won! They then changed their name to 'Muse' and performed anywhere and everywhere, usualy in local pubs to older people who wanted to hear versions of 60's songs.
They weren't having much luck of getting big at this point, until they went to the CMJ music conference in New York. Here, everyone were impressed with their performance, so Maverick record company snatched them up, and Mushroom records grabbed them in the UK.
Muse released singles which didn't get very high in the charts, but eventually, after showing their faces to more countries, they got more famous and sold more records. They appeared on Top Of The Pops a few times, and released 'Showbiz' album in 1999.
They also released 'Origin of Symmetry' in 2001, played at the Reading/Leeds gig (2002), and released their lastest album/dvd, 'Hullabaloo' in 2002.
